Are Weighted Sleep Sacks Safe?

If you’ve ever heard of weighted sleep sacks, you may be wondering if they are safe for your baby. Today I want to tell you about one of my most favorite baby products, the weighted sleep sack from Dreamland Baby Co.

Since I first got these sleep sacks for my twins, they have been sleeping so much better both at naptime and bedtime. These Dreamland Baby weighted sleep sacks are a real game changer for helping babies and toddlers (as well as their parents) get more sleep!

Are Weighted Sleep Sacks Safe?

Sleep sacks themselves are nothing new, and they are a staple of many new parents’ checklists of things they will need for their baby. Unlike loose blankets in cribs which are definitely not safe, sleep sacks and swaddle sacks are safe for your baby as long as they are the correct size.

The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and CDC recommend wearable blankets (or sleep sacks) as part of safe sleep guidelines to reduce the risk of SIDS. But what about weighted sleep sacks? Are these safe too?

Dreamland Baby partnered with pediatricians, NICU nurses, and certified sleep consultants when developing their weighted sleep sacks. Their products exceed all U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards and they use only natural and non-toxic materials.

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute acknowledges the Dreamland Baby™ Weighted Swaddle as a “hip-healthy” product when used as directed.

So basically, a weighted sleep sack should be just as safe as a regular sleep sack, but with the added benefit of helping babies sleep better!

Safe Sleep Guidelines for All Babies

No matter what type of sleep sack you may choose for your baby, weighted or otherwise – don’t forget these important safe sleep guidelines:

  • Always keep blankets, pillows, bumper pads, and soft toys out of the sleep area
  • Make sure every caregiver places the infant on their back for naps and bedtime
  • Always place an infant to sleep on a firm surface in a safety approved crib with a firm
    mattress with fitted sheet
  • Do NOT fall asleep with baby on you while you sleep
  • Once breastfeeding has been well established, try a pacifier at nap and bedtime to
    calm your baby

Benefits of Dreamland Baby Weighted Sleep Sacks

I know from personal experience with my twins just how well these weighted sleep sacks work for helping my babies get better sleep. Here are some of the benefits of these sleep sacks:

  • its gentle weight feels like a parent’s hug
  • weight increases serotonin (the “happy” chemical!) and melatonin to relax your baby and induce sleep (exactly as weighted blankets do for adults)
  • increases relaxation
  • decreases cortisol levels to reduce your baby’s stress as they prepare to sleep
  • can help calm down distracted babies while breastfeeding

Hopefully this post helped ease any concerns you may have had about the safety of weighted sleep sacks. In my opinion, these are one of the best options available to help your baby or toddler get better sleep while keeping them safe.
